Welcome to the Monroe Lab 2 Blog. Please write your initial post to agree or disagree with the following Slate News article: http://www.slate.com/id/2214724/
One you have read the article you should write a response using other sources and news articles that you have found online. You should have a well-reasoned argument, using news sources, opinion pieces, academic commentaries, etc. to back up your arguments. Make sure you paste a link to the articles or sources that you use so that other students can reference them. Posts should be at least FOUR short paragraphs of 3-4 relatively short sentences. This initial post is due by Sunday, April 12, at 12 p.m (noon). if you do not post by then, your grade will start at a 65% (this is assuming you finally do post something).
After your initial post, you will write a response, with NO SOURCES, to another student's initial post (the one WITH sources). You must use that individual's sources to argue for or against their point of view (you can agree with someone, but you have to write why you do and back it up). You will need to name the student. Place this in front of your response:
Example
*In Response to John M's initial post:
While I agree with your second argument, I believe that our democratic society is based on the ideals and beliefs that government control of public discourse is........
This response must be educated, well-reasoned, and solid. You can state your opinion, that is the point, but silly comments and ridiculous examples will be marked down. You want to be a respect blogger (not come off like a nut job! You all are too intelligent for that...) This response should be 2-3 paragraphs, though 2 paragraphs with 4-5 short sentences will be sufficient, if not desired. This second response is due by Wednesday start of your lab period.
Good luck, have fun, and THINK before you post (I recommend you write it in a word document first then cut and paste)
Best,
John

The demise of newspapers in today’s society doesn’t seem like such a big deal. I don’t remember the last time I went out to buy myself a newspaper. Everyone I know reads online in some way, shape or form. On a computer, iPhone, iTouch, Blackberry, Kindle, there are other ways to spread the news other than through newspaper.
ReplyDeleteWhy wait until tomorrow to read what you can read right now? Especially when the story in tomorrow's paper will be outdated by the time it hits your doorstep. With technology today, our generation would rather search the internet, instead of flip through pages in a newspaper, for new stories whether it’s on democracy and political ideals or for entertainment purposes.
Besides being able to search the internet, which is faster and more efficient anyways, having less newspapers to publish can save a lot of paper. No matter how many recycling bins we have in this country there are still plenty of newspapers that get disposed of improperly. With the green movement becoming so popular, saving the earth and paper, this should be a good thing for the environment.
I think people are so scared of change they cant see how this can actually help our society.

Newspapers are definitely on their death beds. Our generation is so technical that we would rather look the news up on the internet, instead of buying a paper and reading it. Coinciding with the recent post, the internet is so useful we don't have to wait for the news to be wrote in the paper to look up current events and news, we get it fast on the net.
ReplyDeleteThe internet is the new newspaper, it's cheaper, convenient, and just as reliable as the paper. In fact the internet has more advantages than the newspaper, because you have limits on the news that you can read in the paper. The paper prints what they want you to see. However on the internet, you have no boundaries on the news you can read.
